Weenk - Thorn Lotus
This is another really unusual, but instantly attractive shimmer ink from Weenk. The name Thorn Lotus is seductive in a dark way, much like the ink. Thorn Lotus is from the three-ink Vol. 3 series “Slow Adventure”. The color is inspired by the Upo (우포) wetlands, the largest inland wetland area in Korea, and home to the uncommon Thorn Lotus plant.
The base color is a vivid, verdant, olive green. It’s exactly the kind of green that I like. There’s nice shading on coated papers (a nice, darkened stroke edging, too) that brings the light yellow aspects to the surface. It’s like rays of sunshine against the green, and it adds life to stroke ends. The shimmer is an interesting peach red that matches the reds of the thorny underside of the plant’s wide, floating leaf.
For testing, I used a Moonman (Majohn) T1 with a medium Jowo nib, and I didn’t have any problems whatsoever with clogging or flow. It’s a wet ink, but nicely controlled. There’s a bit of spread on office copy, but it was clean on high-quality papers. Drying was about average, so no problems there, either. This ink performs well.
I don’t have anything quite like this combination of colors, and I can’t remember seeing anything really similar. I like this ink’s visual mix of both the beauty of the plant and the danger of the thorn.
Weenk sent me this and several other inks to try, but I’d happily buy another bottle of Thorn Lotus!. You can find all of their inks in 15 ml and 50 ml options, both are beautifully bottled and packaged. Check out their website (www.weenk.kr) to see the full collection. In Korea, they are available in select stores, or you can order from online retailers like www.penshop.co.kr, (and www.BlueBlack.kr offers international shipping). With luck, they’ll be more available overseas sometime soon.
