Weenk - Golden Reed
Weenk Golden Reed (순천만) was inspired by the sun-stroked reed fields of the tidal wetlands in Korea’s Suncheon Bay Wetlands Reserve. Like the other inks in Weenk’s Vol. 3 Slow Adventure series, this is a shimmer ink. In this case, it’s a fine-particle, soft, peachy gold.
It definitely looks like a beautiful field of reeds, but what really comes to mind for me is my morning cafe lattes! The base color is almost a milk tea tan, and it has the creaminess that makes it soft and gentle. I’m drinking a latte as I write, and it’s almost a perfect match! Golden Reed immediately reminded me of several well-loved similar inks, but as the comparison image shows, it’s not an exact match for any of them. It’s in good company in that group.
On coated papers, shading is strong with good variation on every stroke. You also find some on uncoated papers, as well, but variation is more gradual. Coated papers often give it a nice darkened edge that adds depth and crispness to strokes The shimmer is never over-powering. It adds just a hint of sparkle and goes very naturally with the base colors.
This is another fairly wet ink, but it isn’t syrupy smooth. In feel, it’s more honest than buttery, but it isn’t dry. The shimmer didn’t cause any issues at all (I used a Moonman/Majohn T1 with a medium Jowo nib for testing). In fact, you really don’t even notice that you’re using a shimmer ink until you see the sparkle of lines at a certain angle. All gain, no pain - that’s exactly how I like shimmer inks for a fountain pen!
Weenk offers high-quality 15 ml and 50 ml options. Both the choice of bottles and packaging design will impress. Special thanks to Weenk for sending this and several other inks to try. I purchased a couple of bottles initially, but knew i wanted more!
