Weenk - Blue
I’m happy to be introducing this fairly new brand! Weenk (“We. Ink. Weenk.”) launched with a beautiful selection of fourteen inks at the Fall 2023 Seoul Pen Show. The brand has been quickly gaining momentum in Korea, where they are based. I have several inks to show, but let’s start with Blue (블루). It’s number 2 from their Original series. I purchased this and another Weenk ink at the Spring 2024 Seoul Pen Show, and Weenk have kindly sent me several more to try. In time, I’ll review them all.
Like many of the inks from Weenk, this is a nicely vibrant, saturated blue. It has a bright, cheery personality. At times, it reminds me a bit of Iroshizuku Kon-Peki. At other times, I think of KWZ Walk Over Vistula. These are popular blues, and I think Weenk Blue will appeal to many. It’s a serius blue, but it’s bright and fun at the same time.
There’s a nice, rich, dark red sheen in both areas of pooling and on written stroke edges on many papers. It isn’t overly aggressive which I appreciate, but there’s enough to add a little bling.
Writing performance has been very consistent and comfortable. It’s a nicely lubricated ink that flows well, but it’s sure on the page. I haven’t found even a hint of feathering on any of the six papers I used for testing. On cheap copy paper, there’s light show-through in places (as expected with such a saturated blue), but on better quality papers show-through is nothing more than the occasional hint, and there is no bleed-through. Drying times were pretty reasonable for a sheening ink, but particularly wet stroke ends may take longer than average. This is definitely not an ink you want to spill!
This is a solid choice for a fun, but professional blue. Weenks bottles and packaging are very nicely done, as well. They offer a nice 50ml bottle that is kind of like Iroshizuku’s iconic favorite, and a nice 15ml bottle, as well. Both are topped with stylish, wooden caps.
You can find Weenk inks at their beautiful website (www.weenk.kr) along with a variety of glass, leather, and paper stationery products. They’re also sold a variety of retailers in Korea (including Penshop.co.kr, and BlueBlack.co.kr ships overseas, too). They plan to be more internationally available soon. Keep an eye on Weenk!
