Weenk - Persimmon
Weenk’s Vol. 2 “Grow Ripe” series contains three inks inspired by the persimmon fruit. In this review, we’re looking at Persimmon (단감). In the Weenk collection, it is ink number six. Persimmons are loved in Korea and are eaten in three different stages of ripeness. This ink matches the color of the freshest and youngest stage, when the flesh is firm, and the skin is a deep yellow to light orange.
Persimmon is a beautiful light orange bordering yellow. It’s a bright color, but it’s rich and deep at the same time, which tempers the overall color. There’s a slight powderiness on some papers, as well, and that adds a delicious softness in tone. This matches the fruit very closely. In broader nibs, you’ll find a thin, dark stroke profile edging that leans red. There’s very prominent shading on coated papers, as well. If you don’t think yellows or oranges are for you, this ink might just prove you wrong!
This is a very comfortable ink on the page. It’s wet in flow, and lets you truly feel the smoothness of the nib you’re using. Drying was average or just a touch longer, but never a problem. There’s not a trace of feathering on any of my test papers. Strokes were very clean and sharp, without any spreading at all. This is a very nice writing ink.
Four things really stand out. First, the base color is gorgeous and invigorating. Next, the shading on many coated papers is very prominent, from a brighter orange juice yellow to the more orange color that matches the fruit. Third, the writing performance is comfortable and very clean. And finally, the beautiful powderiness that I found on some papers sets it apart from some of the similar inks you can see in the comparison image. This is a very nice ink.
You can find Weenk inks through online retailers like www.penshop.co.kr, or www.BlueBlack.kr (offers international shipping), and select stores in Korea. Distribution will expand overseas before long, too. Weenk inks are available in very nice 15 ml bottles, and a more elegant 50 ml, as well. Both come with bamboo caps. I purchased my bottle of Persimmon at the spring 2024 Seoul Pen Show.
