Starry Ink - Vanity Land
Vanity Land - what a great name for an ink that sheens and (if you choose to add it) sparkles with gold shimmer! Starry Ink Vanity Land is from season three of the Sodapop series. As with the others in season three, it comes with a packet of gold shimmer to add as much, or as little as you prefer.
The base color is a very pleasant midnight blue. It first reminded me of Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo or KWZ Baltic Memories. On office copy, it keeps this dark persona with slight shading and no sheen. On higher quality papers, it’s a tiny bit lighter with a delicious, powdery, matte appearance in the lighter shaded areas. I’d love to see more shading, but it’s there on some. The sheen comes out on coated papers, but it isn’t overpowering. It’s more a sheen friend, than a sheen monster. And of course, with added shimmer, the celebrations really begin!
Both in look and in writing performance, Vanity Land performs well. I didn’t find any feathering on any of the papers I used for testing. I didn’t have any problems with flow or clogging from the shimmer, either. It’s rich and smooth in flow consistency, quite comfortable in use. I didn’t have problems with smudging, and it dries reasonably fast, too.
It isn’t surprising with a deep, rich ink like this, but there is significant ghosting and spots of bleeding on office copy. These aren’t problems on most high-quality coated papers, so it doesn’t bother me at all, but it does keep it from being office friendly.
Like the other Sodapop series inks, Vanity Land is available in a 35 ml bottle, or as part of a 4-ink, 5ml set of all four season three inks. In both cases, you get the packet of gold shimmer and the portioning spoon. I recommend the set, but either way, these are fun inks!
Special thanks to Starry Ink for sending this and a bunch of other inks and papers over to try.
