What a beauty! Today’s ink is Pennonia Róka Koma. “Fox Friend” in English, in Hungarian folktales, Róka Koma is the name commonly given to a lovable, sly fox who continually tries to trick other animals, but always ends up tricking itself. I think the name is a great match for the ink!

Visually, this is a gorgeous, vibrant red-orange. It reminds me of a well-fed campfire, flickering in the dark of night, capturing the attention of all. This is a very nice shading ink, with strokes dancing between darker reddish tones and lighter oranges. The splatter shows dark edging and a sliver of silver sheen. In writing, sheen and halo are absent, but the fast changing shades provide lots of personality. This is a unique orange.

As a writing ink, Róka Koma was really quite exceptional. I rated it a “great” on all six test papers. From coated and uncoated premiums, to standard office copy, stroke profiles were clean and sharp. Shading was consistent across the six, too. Drying provided the only differences. Rhodia was slowest at 20-30 seconds. Mnemosyne was 15-25, and the other premiums were 10-20 seconds. Office copy was the fastest at under 5 seconds. This is a low-viscosity ink that flows nicely.

There’s just nothing here to dislike. Róka Koma is a gorgeous, fresh, fiery red-orange. It’s a magnificent shader, over-flowing with character. It’s consistent, and flexible across different papers. This fox is definitely a friend!
