Pelikan Edelstein - Olivine
Pelikan makes high-quality inks across their entire catalog. With its elegant, 50 ml bottle, and tasteful, secure packaging, the Edelstein series is their premier line. Each year, Pelikan creates a new Edelstein ink to offer as their Ink of the Year. In 2018, it was Olivine.
Olivine is a cool and confident dark green. As the chromatography shows, there’s a lot of complexity that creates the color, but the result is deceptively simple. It’s a nice shading ink on coated papers. On some, you’ll sometimes notice the tiniest hint of yellow, but it never really becomes a dark olive green. The blue undertones balance that and give us the cool tone that is most common in both light and dark areas of this forest green.
Edelstein inks are consistent and reliable writing inks, and that’s true for Olivine. In flow, I’d call it a neutral, but it leans slightly wet. It’s wetter than some Edelstein inks, but I’d still call it a neutral, overall.
I didn’t have any issues with feathering or spread on any of the papers tested. Strokes were nice and crisp. The splatter shows a plum red sheen. You can see a bit on the Cosmo Air Snow writing sample, but that’s the only paper that showed it in writing. Drying was about average, but you will notice some show through on uncoated papers. It’s a bit heavy on cheap office copy, but not a terrible problem on higher-quality papers.
I like the particular green we find with Olivine, and the shading on coated papers, too. Overall, it’s a very nice writing ink. It’s hard to go wrong with the Edelstein inks. You can find Olivine for anywhere from $20 to $29 per bottle, so shop around before buying.
