Pennonia - Danuvius
I really like Pennonia inks. Their passion is clear. Of the forty-seven inks that they currently offer, a huge number are immediately interesting, and stand out from the standards in each color category. Some of their best are their multi-chromatic shading inks. This group includes Danuvius, the second most purchased ink on their website.
Inspired by the changing experiences as you follow the flowing Danube River through Hungary and Romania, the countries Pennonia calls home, Danuvius offers beautiful shifts in color. The base color is a powdery slate blue. It’s gentle and cool in tone but doesn’t strain the reader’s eyes.
On uncoated papers, there’s nice shading from light to dark on almost every stroke. On coated papers, hidden colors really blossom and bloom. Strong pinks and lavenders share the attention with the base blue in both ink swatches and stroke centers in writing. For the creative, the effect multiplies with the touch of a water brush, too.
Danuvius is an excellent writing ink. Pennonia’s handcrafted inks don’t disappoint in performance. I didn’t find feathering on any of the six papers tested. Even on cheap copy paper, show through is very minimal, and a dark stroke edging makes it particularly sharp on coated papers. In flow, it’s a nice wet ink, and very comfortable in use. Drying times were average or better on all papers, so no worries there, either.
Pennonia inks have become more widely available over the last couple of years, and for good reason. If the brand is new to you, they deserve your attention. Direct from Pennonia, a 60 ml bottle is EUR10.50. You can find them for US$13-16 at various other retailers online. I definitely recommend Danuvius. If you check out some of my other reviews of Pennonia inks, you’ll probably find quite a few more eye-catchers to add to your list, as well!
