The Edelstein series of inks from Pelikan are always beautifully presented, and they’re typically reliable performers, as well. To be fair, they should be for the premium price they command. In some ways, today’s ink, Aventurine lived up to my expectations, but in others, it left me a little underwhelmed.

Named for the semi-precious gemstone, Aventurine has the deeper greens of some of the darker examples of the stone. In common color terms, I’d call this a true emerald or an Irish green. The splatter shows a nice darkening around the edges of saturated areas, and you can see a bit of this in written strokes, as well. Shading varies based on paper and nib choices, but at best I would call this a moderate shading ink. There’s a very interesting hint of bronze, coppery brown sheen that forms in tiny webs on the splatters, but I didn’t find any in normal writing.

As for writing, this is a fairly well-behaved ink. It’s neither wet, nor dry, but I’d say that it flows comfortably. On some coated papers, stroke profile is clean and sharp with a touch of edging to make it pop. On others, and uncoated papers in general, I found micro-feathering a little more consistently than I would prefer. There’s also mild to moderate show-through. Neither are prominent enough to put me off using Aventurine, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Pelikan’s Edelstein Aventurine is definitely a lovely green. If that’s what you want, you’ll be pleased. To be honest, though, I don’t find a real “wow” factor here, and there were some minor issues in performance. At this price point, I guess I just want both a bit more, and a bit less. I won’t be buying a whole bottle, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t enjoy the ink if you do. Happy writing!
