Anderillium - Colossal Squid Dark

Anderillium Colossal Squid Dark - Ink Drop

Deliciously juicy, this is truly a writer’s ink! Anderillium Colossal Squid Dark is much more a loyal puppy than the foreboding creature for which it’s named. Thank you to Anderillium Inks for sending this beautiful writing ink over for me to try.

Sheening with dark to light shading!

Colossal Squid Dark has the infinite darkness of squid ink, but it balances that depth in a base that teeters between blue and green. On some papers, I want to call it a blue, but on others it’s more a green teal. There’s a moderate shading that helps the base color surface for air and adds variety. As the swatch and splatter pictures show, there’s some nice red and yellow sheening in areas of pooling, but in writing it almost never develops strength. I appreciate this, as the depth of color is beautiful on its own.

Lovely depth of color!

As I mentioned above, this is a really lovely writing ink. It’s wet and juicy but retains a viscosity that makes it confident and rich on the page. The consistency of the flow is so comfortable. It’s a real pleasure, and easily a nice choice for a daily, workhorse (worksquid?) ink. I didn’t find any feather, but there was some bleed-through on cheaper, uncoated papers. Drying was never a problem and stayed between 20 and 30 seconds on all six test papers.

Anderillium Colossal Squid Dark’s bottle and packaging

I don’t particularly like the jam jar bottles with metal caps. I’m never confident about this style of bottle or cap with ink, and they’re a bit of a letdown, in general. (Anderillium have switched to a somewhat better bottle design since writing this review.)

Anderillium Colossal Squid Dark - swatch card

Based in Florida, Anderillium handmake all of their inks in-house. As you might guess from their themes, they are passionate about protecting the oceans and wildlife, and choose sustainable, environmentally friendly materials whenever possible. Overall, I definitely recommend Anderillium Colossal Squid Dark. It’s beautiful in the pen, and a pleasure on the page. At US$14.50 for 45 ml, it’s a great introduction to Anderillium inks, too. Enjoy!
