Starry Ink - Sodapop - Maple Syrup
Maple Syrup is from Starry Ink’s season 2 Sodapop set. The set has both hits and misses, but overall, it’s a lot of fun and a great bargain. The set comes with a generous packet of pearly silver shimmer powder and a tiny portioning spoon. Experimenting with adding different amounts of shimmer powder is a real learning experience and a lot of fun!
I’m not sure why this ink is called Maple Syrup, as on paper it’s very much an orangish-red when wet, but it dries to more of a reddish-orange. I have 40 or 50 red inks in my collection, but this one is definitely unique, and I like it very much. It reminds me of certain supermarket tomatoes. I can see myself using this color regularly. I added half of a small portion of the fine-particle shimmer powder and the result is quite nice!
In terms of writing experience, Maple Syrup was not my favorite of the four in the set. It’s a lovely shading ink with an optimistic, positive personality. The problem was a tendency to feather on both coated and uncoated papers. In ideal conditions, it performs well, but any areas of saturation seem to immediately spread and feather. It also suffers from moderate bleed-through. It’s an attractive ink, but these performance issues are difficult to ignore. Pairing it with a dry-writing, fine nib may solve the issues, but no promises.
Although in writing, I only really enjoyed two of the four inks in Starry Ink’s Sodapop set, I still completely recommend you consider it. At US$20 (delivered) on AliExpress, it’s ridiculously cheap for so much fun. Even after experimenting with all four inks, I still have 75% of the shimmer powder remaining, so there’s more fun to come! As of February 2023, the set is still available, but it won’t be there forever.
