Robert Oster - Jade
Robert Oster Jade is a new ink for me, but it’s been in the Signature series for quite a few years now. I was initially attracted to the vibrant light greens that you see in the official swatch star, but I found Jade to be darker and more olive than I expected. It wasn’t a disappointment, but it was a surprise.
While the Cosmo Air Light swatch does nicely reflect the complex color of a dark piece of jade, the ink is more vegetal on most papers. There were strong yellow undertones on all of my other test papers, and I don’t normally associate that with the gemstone. I’d call it a jungle olive. It’s a very popular style of green, and this is a nice one.
There’s a lot of nice color variation, especially from medium to dark across most strokes. It’s stronger on coated papers, but uncoated papers show it, as well. The shading isn’t often dramatic, but the variation is very attractive and adds a lot of personality.
In performance, this is a consistent and comfortable ink. Stroke profiles were sharp on all good papers. On office copy paper, there is a bit of spread, but it’s very usable. You will find some show-through on uncoated papers and minor spots of bleeding on highly saturated spots. On good papers, neither are big concerns.
Jade is wet in flow (very wet for a Robert Oster ink), and drying was always average or better. I didn’t find any of the crusting that can spoil some olive greens, either. This is a very comfortable writing ink.
Robert Oster Jade is an attractive, very versatile ink, and I really like the writing experience. I can see why it remains in their lineup. My initial surprise turned out to be a nice one!
