KWZ - Berry
I’ve reviewed quite a few KWZ inks. The small company’s handmade inks are consistently impressive in both color and performance. I’ve been looking forward to trying KWZ Berry. It’s kind of the older, more mature cousin to KWZ Gummiberry, which is one of my favorite vibrant purples.
KWZ Berry seems to vary between a rich, dark, but vibrant purple, and a dusty, dark plum violet. In my experience, the difference seems to relate a bit to the paper-type, and a lot on the wetness of the pen that you choose. The wetter the pen, the darker the line.
As you can see, Cosmo Air Light brought out stronger red influences, while on Tomoe River it’s more a plum violet than purple. In writing on most of my test papers, it’s somewhere in the middle, but most often produces the redder, dark purple. I like all of the results, but the redder black raspberry is my preference. There is some shading on some coated papers, but in general, this isn’t a strong shading ink. It’s all about the color.
This is a fantastic writing ink (no surprise for a KWZ). It’s fairly wet in flow, and quite luscious. It glides across the page like a graceful ice skater. For me, the viscosity of the ink is perfect luxury for writing pleasure.
Stroke profiles were crisp and accurate on all papers tested. I didn’t find any feather or spread, even on office copy paper. Show-through was very minimal, which surprised me for such a dark, saturated color. Drying times were average, overall.
If you haven’t tried any KWZ inks, I recommend you do. If you like Berry, it’s a great place to start, but there are quite a few other beauties to tempt you. They priced nicely, too. You’ll find them in 60 ml bottles for US13-15 at many online retailers. Enjoy!
