Manufactum - Spatburgunder
I’m always interested in inks made from non-traditional ingredients. German retailer, Manufactum is well-known for eco-conscious home and lifestyle products. This includes seven fountain pen inks, including one made from coffee, and the ink reviewed here, which is made with wine. Wine is a non-traditional ingredient thesedays, but it actually has a history of use in ink that goes back at least 400 years. I suppose that makes it non-traditional, yet very traditional at the same time! Let’s take a look at Manufactum Spatburgunder.
Manufactum’s inks are made by De Atramentis, and that makes sense. No modern ink maker has more experience at making inks from wine. Spatburgunder is the German name for pinot noir, and translates as “late burgundy’. (You sometimes see this ink called “Pinot Noir”, as well, but from what I see online, it isn’t an exact match for De Atramentis Pinot Noir.) This is a scented ink. It definitely has the full-bodied smell of a glass of red wine, but it isn’t obnoxious or overwhelming.
Spatburgunder is a fairly saturated, deep, wine red that leans slightly purple with pink undertones in light areas of shading. There isn’t too much shading, but there are pops of light at stroke ends on many coated papers. Coated papers show nice, dark, stroke edging, as well.
Writing experience is quite pleasant, and flow is very smooth. I always expect ink made with wine to be dry, but this is on the wet side. Drying times were always average or better. On coated papers, strokes were clean and sharp, but there’s some micro-feathering on some uncoated papers. On office copy, it’s more a slight spreading than feathering, but it wasn’t too bad. You will find some show-through, though.
Overall, I like this ink. The color is a nice balance of red and subtle pinks. I like the red wine scent, too. Manufactum sells 45 ml bottles for €15.60. That’s a good price for an interesting, scented red.
Special thanks to Maria at www.inksinspiration.com for sending me a sample sip of this ink! Her site brings hard-to-find inks to Spanish and European ink lovers, and you’ll enjoy checking it out.
