Diamine - Sunshine Yellow
So many yellow inks are borderline readable at best, good for creative needs, but unusable for regular writing. Undersaturation negatively affects yellow inks, maybe more than any other color category. That’s not a problem with Diamine Sunshine Yellow. This ink pops!
This is a gorgeous yellow. It’s the deep and concentrated color of a golden sun on some papers. On others, red undertones add a distinctive hint of orange that brings to mind the birth of a beautiful sunrise. In these instances, it’s much like the rich color of the flesh of a juicy mango. I really like the more mango results, and they help place Sunshine Yellow among my favorite, non-mustard yellows.
There’s some good shading on coated papers with abrupt shifts from light to dark at stroke ends. There’s often a nicely defined stroke edging that leans red in the most extreme examples. They help give strokes a very clean, sharp profile. I didn’t find any feathering on coated papers. On uncoated papers, you don’t get the dark edges, but you do find color variation. Even on cheap office copy, there’s very little spread and no significant show-through. On all papers tested, drying was average or just slightly longer. It was usable and easily readable on all of the papers I tested.
Diamine Sunshine Yellow is a beautiful, very feel-good ink. It’s hard not to smile when using it. Performance was very good, and with the red undertones, I think the creative possibilities are huge. Diamine inks are always well-priced and easy to find, so if you’ve been hesitant to try a yellow, this is a great place to start!
