De Atramentis - Pearlescent Green
De Atramentis Pearlescent Green is an odd, but very interesting shimmer ink. I believe this is one of several additions to the expanded Pearlescent series. Get ready - this ink is going to surprise you!
Contrary to what you might expect, the base color here is not green, but a lovely, smokey grey. The vast majority of the time, the base color is largely hidden by the brilliant green shimmer. I didn’t realize at first, but the pearlescence comes from the shimmer. This is a color-changing shimmer (be sure to check out the images below). From some angles, the intense green becomes a gorgeous rose gold-copper! When you see it, it’s a very impressive effect. I honestly didn’t even notice it for several days of writing, and then suddenly everything changed! Visually, this is an innovative ink.
Occasionally, you’ll find some stroke shading, but it isn’t often enough to be considered a feature. As a shimmer ink, that’s not surprising. In better examples, it darkens towards the very edge as the shimmer groups, which makes it well-defined in those cases. However, this ink isn’t without problems ion some papers, as well.
Writing performance is where things are a bit disappointing. Like a number of the De Atramentis inks that I’ve tried, feathering can be a significant issue. I tested this ink on three coated and three uncoated papers. It was clean and sharp on Mnemosyne (80gsm), but on all others feathering was from moderate to profuse. On the plus side, drying was quick, but shimmer smear is something to consider with this ink.
On Mnemosyne, this is a really attractive, quite unique ink that performs nicely. If that’s your paper of choice, I recommend giving this ink a try. De Atramentis offers a huge range of inks, and they’re pretty well priced. This is a very innovative ink, quite beautiful when everything comes together well.
