Colorverse - Coast Redwood
Colorverse Coast Redwood is from the Earth Edition: Wisdom of Trees series. It’s ink 55 in their catalog. Originally packaged in a 65ml bottle together with a 15ml bottle of Redwood Forest, it’s now available in their 5ml mini bottles, as well. It’s a gorgeous pairing, but the mini bottles are an easy way to try a variety.
Coast Redwood was a surprise. I expected more of a burgundy brick red, but what I found falls more in the burgundy plum category. It’s a lovely, cool, soft pinkish red in shading. In dark areas and in the majority of written strokes, it’s far richer, and more of a black cherry. I’d like to see more shading to add highlights, but this is an attractive ink.
In writing, I tested it on six papers. Overall, it performed well on all, and there was no feathering on any. My favorite results came on Fabriano (uncoated), where it was rich, luscious, and popped off the page. For coated, Kokuyo (coated) seemed to produce the greatest shading but shading really isn’t a strong feature. This ink is definitely on the dry side. It still flows well and didn’t cause any problems, but I think most will prefer the experience in a nice, juicy pen to balance it out. Drying was mostly faster than average, but it’s faster on some than on others. This is a nice writing ink if you can accept the moderate dryness.
The Wisdom of Trees series is really a beautifully curated collection of colors, and Coast Redwood will really please some users. The inks go very well together. I think it’s a very attractive series that doesn’t get enough attention. If you like slightly drier inks, this is a series you need to consider. Enjoy!
