3 Oysters - Hunters - Sahara Tan
Sahara Tan is the darker of two tan browns in the 3 Oysters Hunters series. Released in early 2023, 3 Oysters sent me the Hunters inks to try. They come in the beautiful, glass, 38ml 3 Oysters bottles, although mine arrived in branded, 5ml, eyedropper vials. I’m not sure that these vials are available for sale normally, but packaged together, it would make a nice series sampler set.
I’d call this a golden brown to dark chocolate brown. Image two shows a swatch on Cosmo Air Light (83gsm), and I think this paper really highlights the beauty and range quite well. Like the other inks in the Hunters series, it has a really attractive, matte appearance. In saturated areas, there’s a cloudiness that brings secondary color elements swirling to the surface.
There’s some shading with Sahara Tan, and that helps demonstrate the full range of tan browns in this ink. I didn’t find any shading on Fabriano (85gsm), but on uncoated Apica (82gsm), and coated Mnemosyne (80gsm), Kokuyo (70gsm), and Rhodia (80gsm) mild shading was visible.
Sahara Tan is an excellent writing ink. For me, flow and feel on the page are perfect. It’s wet, but always gives you complete control. Drying was fast on uncoated papers, but more average on coated than the previous two reviewed from the series. Again, feathering and spread were totally absent, and strokes were sharp on all six papers tested.
I’ve really enjoyed this series, so far. Sahara Tan is a really nice ink, and has immediately jumped to my group of favorites in the brown/tan color range. The 3 Oysters Hunters series is easily available in Asia, but at the time of review, it hasn’t yet made it to N. America or Europe. I have a feeling that will change fairly soon. If, or when the Hunters series is available near you, grab them!

Special thanks to 3 Oysters for sending this and the other inks in the Hunters series for me to try. As always, my review reflects my full and honest opinions about the ink based on my personal experience using it.
