R. Oster - Burgundy Choc. Notes
Robert Oster Burgundy Chocolate Notes is quite unusual. Originally created for the UK fountain pen group, FPUK, it is now part of the standard line. Burgundy and chocolate are both traditionally powerful color components, but in this case the combination is more subtle than either individually. The color is much more graceful than you might initially expect.
This is a complex ink. The matte finish is decidedly powdery and soft in appearance. It truly blends a plum mauve with the dusty grey-brown of milky hot chocolate. On some papers, stroke interiors hint of a glowing lavender. The chromatography shows a bright blue that might explain the very faint lavender glow. It feels almost Victorian, like a color lost in centuries past.
In writing, this ink performs very well. It’s somewhat dry, but not uncomfortable at all. Strokes have a confident edging, and I didn’t see any feathering. Drying was slightly longer than average, but not too bad. I did notice a fair amount of bleed-through on several test papers, so I don’t expect good results on cheap office copy unless you stick to very fine nibs.
Burgundy Chocolate Notes is an interesting ink. I’m not going to buy a bottle, but I can see using it for creative projects more than for everyday writing. It performed well overall, so don’t hesitate if it catches your eye. Enjoy!
