Ranga - Bamboo (Large)
A couple of years ago, I bought a Ranga 4C and have really enjoyed it since day one. I was so impressed that on the very day it arrived, I ordered another as a gift for my father! I’ve had my eye on a second Ranga, and somehow my father must have known. He surprised me with a gorgeous Ranga Bamboo, the very model I’d been wanting!
This is the larger of the two bamboo models Ranga currently offers. At 15.4 cm capped and 14.9 cm uncapped, this is a large pen. I’ve included a size comparison image below that places it next to some very common fountain pens. It’s well-balanced, and the design is extremely comfortable in the hand. The material is the “premium” blue ebonite. I’m not sure what makes it premium, but I like it. In fact, I love it! To be honest, I don’t think I would have chosen the blue myself, so I’m really glad he did. The color works beautifully with the shape and the material. It’s polished to a silky soft, too, but you can still sense that this is a handmade pen. There are a variety of nib options, and this is a number 6, steel Jowo in medium. The steel nibs are available in silver and gold color choices. Like my other Ranga, it wrote perfectly right out of the box. It can be eyedroppered, but it comes with a standard Schmidt converter, as well.
I love both of my Rangas. They are beautifully made by hand by Mr. Pandurangan, and his 50+ years of pen-making really shows. There’s a video on YouTube that shows Mr. Pandurangan at his lathe, creating the threads by hand. Watching the video really connects you to the handmade process that created your pen. If you haven’t tried a Ranga, you really should. Both the 4C and the Bamboo are nice pens, and a nice bargain, too. I think you’ll be impressed!
One tip: I’ve noticed that many, but not all retailers offer the Jowo nib option, so shop around if that’s what you have in mind. Also, check around for different color patterns, as well. What you want may be unavailable at one seller, but ready and waiting at another.
