Pelikan Edelstein - Moonstone
Moonstone was Pelikan’s Ink of the Year for 2020. It’s part of their Edelstein series and comes in the beautiful Edelstein bottle. It’s available on its own or packaged together with the M205 in Moonstone, as shown in the last image. The pen has a light sprinkling of sparkle in the material, and that helps it mimic the semi-precious stone quite nicely.
Edelstein Moonstone is a lovely grey. It’s a particularly attractive shading ink, too. Light areas are a creamy, cigarette-smoke grey, while darker areas take on varying shades of pencil grey. It has a pleasant, very clean visual feel. The splatter shows a nice textured perimeter on areas of saturation, and this carries over in writing as a crisp stroke edging and profile. There’s a hint of yellow in the chromatography, but in writing this is a pure, smoky, cool grey.
Moonstone is a nice writing ink. It’s fairly wet, and it flows very smoothly. I didn’t find any instances of feathering or show-through at all. It’s a very clean writing ink. Drying was average overall, so I don’t have anything to complain about in terms of performance!
If you’re looking for a true grey, with creamy smoke shading, this is a very nice choice. The only hesitation is the price. I like the M205 Moonstone, as well, though, and if you enjoy the 200-series size, I recommend buying the pen and ink set to save a bit. If you look around, there are some good deals out there. Enjoy!
Pelikan Edelstein inks are not cheap (so different from their 4001 series). That’s the only real pause factor. Do I like Mandarin? Absolutely! However, there are fairly similar options for a lot less. Then again, that bottle is hard to resist! Difficult decision, but if you do try it, you won’t be disappointed.
