Midnight Blue is from Inkebara’s Basic Colors collection. Opened in 2016, Inkebara (aka “the Ink Factory”), is a Czech ink maker that has developed a strong reputation in the region. They have an extensive selection of mixable, dye-based fountain pen inks, and a selection of calligraphy  and watercolor inks. In addition, they offer custom, small-batch inks, and make inks for a variety of independent retailers. I’ve been impressed with all of the Inkebara inks that I’ve tried.

Wow! Rainbow sheen! This ink is a lovely deep blue, and really comes alive as it dries. It’s a very high viscosity ink, but flows smoothly. This promotes both a sharp stroke profile, and a high sheen. The splatter shows a very unusual rainbow sheen, with colors singing in chorus. In writing, sheen edging was visible on all premium papers. It also showed decent shading on all papers tested. Visually, this ink has a strong, vibrant personality.

As a writing ink, Midnight Blue is an easy ink to work with, and it works quite well! Strokes were razor-sharp on all six test papers. Coated premiums provided the strongest sheening and shading, but this is a versatile ink, and it performed well on all papers. Drying times can be long on high-sheening inks, but this wasn’t a problem here. Coated premiums dried in 15-25 seconds, uncoated premiums in 10-15, and office copy in under 5 seconds. This is a nice ink for readers, writers, and those hesitant to try a sheening ink.
