Ferris Wheel Press Buttered Popcorn - ink drop

Today’s ink, Buttered Popcorn, is from Ferris Wheel Press’ Summer 2019 collection. It’s available in their beautiful 85ml, 38ml, and 20ml bottles, or as part of their 3-ink, 5ml charger sets. I really appreciate having so many options. Smart business! As it conjures visions of the movie theatre, the delicious name Buttered Popcorn becomes more appropriate the longer you look at the ink!

Visually, this is a beautiful combination of yellows and oranges. It’s a nice shading ink, and the base color is a sun-kissed orange. Light areas fade to a buttery golden yellow, while dark areas take on more of a deeper yellow-orange with hints of amber and red. In the splatter, areas of pooling are edged in a textured, burnt tomato red. On premium coated papers, this shows in a defining stroke halo. This is a very clean, pleasing ink.

As a writing ink, it performed well on all five test papers. Strokes were very well-defined on the four premium papers. I rated them a great. On office copy, feather wasn’t a problem, but there wasn’t any darkening at the edges, and it wasn’t as sharp here. Shading showed on all five, but it was strongest on Kokuyo. The rich halo was dark on all four premiums, but it didn’t appear on office copy. Overall, Rhodia and Kokuyo were top performers, but all five were very good. Drying times were 10-25 seconds on premiums, and 5 seconds on office copy. This is a nice writing ink. It looked great on premium papers, but it was good on office copy, too.

I’m happy to be able to recommend Buttered Popcorn. Ferris Wheel Press puts out beautiful products and sophisticated, thoughtful packaging. Yellow inks are notoriously difficult to do well, but this yellow is a treat and performs very well. Grab a handful and enjoy!
