3 Oysters - Hunters - Mountain Gray
I like two kinds of grey inks: smokey, creamy greys, and greys with strong undertones that take the color in different directions. Mountain Gray from the 3 Oysters Hunters series is complex and hard to categorize, and I love it!
This is such an interesting color! As the chromagraph shows (image six), orange, yellow, and blue play a big role in the visual identity of this ink. The result depends a lot on your choice of pen and paper, but I think it’s best described as a lichen grey green. In the swatch comparison (image seven), it’s somewhere between Kala Winter Dawn, and Robert Oster Motor Oil. These are both inks that defy expectations and quickly grow on most people who try them.
In a really wet nib on coated papers, it can seem to show as a deep, dark grey, especially if you only give a quick look. It feels like a grey, but there’s definitely something more. Uncoated papers bring out creamy, dark olive aspects and really make it interesting. From medium to dark, there’s nice variation, too. Suddenly, it’s very much not exactly what you first thought.
Mountain Gray is a very pleasant writing ink. Having used all of the Hunters series inks, I can say that this is a consistent quality of the series. Mountain Gray has a nice medium viscosity, making it very comfortable and reliable on all paper types. From feather to drying time, I don’t have any complaints. In wetness and flow, it has the feel and writing experience that pleases basically everyone. It works as one with the nib, rather than on or separate from the nib. That’s exactly what I like.
For me, 3 Oysters Mountain Gray is probably the happiest surprise of the six Hunters series inks. I expected it would perform well, but I didn’t expect to be really wowed. Wow! I was wrong! There are lots of exceptions, of course, but many companies stick to the traditional when it comes to grey inks. I’ve previously reviewed 3 Oysters Doldam; it’s a grey with lots of personality and hidden secrets, and it remains one of my favorites in the color category. With Mountain Gray, they’ve created another winner. It’s beautifully complex, and I highly recommend it!

Special thanks to 3 Oysters for sending this and the other inks in the Hunters series for me to try. As always, my review reflects my full and honest opinions about the ink based on my personal experience using it.
